“Kumme, pup. I know someone who’s probably very eager to see you,” Silas said to the Dalmatian as they both exited his buggy. He half expected the dog to wander off toward the Fishers’ barn, or maybe even make a beeline toward the house, but the animal sat patiently beside the buggy as he tied the horse’s lead to the white vinyl fence near the end of the Fishers’ driveway. It would have been more convenient to tie the horse at the hitching rail near the roadside stand, but since it was the middle of the night, Silas decided not to risk waking the entire Fisher household by bringing a rumbling buggy up their driveway.

On second thought, maybe I should have waited for morning to let Leah know that I found her dog, Silas thought as he held his flashlight in his mouth, aiming it just so to make sure he’d tied his horse securely. Things were going remarkably well with Leah, and he hoped that his impulsive decision to bring Willow home at this late hour wasn’t a mistake. Still, he knew she loved this spotted dog very much, and knowing how anxious she easily became, he wanted to reunite the two as quickly as possible.

Silas headed across the Fishers’ lawn with Willow on his heels, pointing his flashlight at the well-manicured grass in front of them. Willow let out several contented little grunts like she was glad to be home. Silas chuckled, amused at the dog’s antics. He glanced toward the house, noticing that it was shrouded in slumber, except for a room on the first floor, where the warm glow of gas lamps spilled out of the windows.

Good, someone was awake.

When he quietly made his way up the porch stairs, he prepared to gently knock on the door, but it swung open before he could step up to it.

There was Leah, flushed, frazzled, and covered in splotches of flour. “Hi, S-Silas.”

Silas grinned, though his face ached to release a wide smile. Flour coated Leah’s black apron, hands and forearms, and there was even a spot of the white powder on her cheek. “Doing some baking at this late hour?”

Leah nodded, brushing away some of her brunette hair that had worked its way out of her bun and from beneath her navy bandana. “Jah. Couldn’t s-sleep so I figured I’d do something useful.” She glanced down at the mess on her clothing. “I got a little c-carried away.” As if just realizing how late it was, her eyes grew large with wonder. “What b-brings you here?”

“I found something that belongs to you.” Silas stepped aside and pointed his flashlight to the front lawn, where the beam of light landed on Willow. The dog made several small circles before plopping down, as if she could finally relax.

“Ach du lieva! W-Willow!” Leah exclaimed as she rushed onto the covered porch, her eyes brightening to match the light of the full moon. The dog stood and ran to her, greeting her with playful licks, jumps and tail wags.
